David and Manjy Sidoo, renowned UBC alumni and supporters, have committed $50,000 to establish a new Entrance Award at UBC ‘s Allard School of Law.
As one of Canada’s leading law schools, the Peter A. Allard School of Law attracts some of the brightest minds across the country and around the globe. Each year the Allard School of Law admits approximately 180 students to first-year law, for a total population in the three-year Juris Doctor (J.D.) program of around 550 students.
The inaugural David and Manjy Sidoo Entrance Award in Law will be granted to a student entering the J.D. program in the fall of 2015 who has overcome a significant personal challenge in order to pursue a university education, such as an illness, a death in the family or an injury. Preference will be given to a candidate who is a first generation university student and/or has demonstrated athletic achievement.
David and Manjy Sidoo, along with sons Dylan and Jordan, are very active in their community and uphold the belief that those who have been blessed with success should find opportunities to give back. Together they created Sidoo Family Giving to continue to make a difference in the lives of others. The David and Manjy Sidoo Entrance Award in Law is one of many contributions that the Sidoos have made to students at the University of British Columbia and the community at large.
Regarding the new Award, David commented, “My hope is that this contribution will have an impact on the student experience at UBC. It reflects our desire to provide assistance for students’ ability to overcome personal or financial challenges to acquire education that is their right.”
