As a former pro athlete whose life was changed by sports at a pivotal age, David Sidoo understands the value of athletics in the life of a youth…especially an inner city youth.

On the weekend of May 25, 2013, David was delighted to attend and support the Vancouver Police Department Soccer Tournament for Inner City Youth. More than 500 kids participated in the event, which was organized by the VPD Athletic League and Detective Kal Dosanjh.

From the Link Paper article, Dosanjh is quoted as saying, “David is an example of what sports can do, being the first Indo-Canadian professional football player,” Dosanjh said. “David would agree with me that by engaging the youth in a sporting activity it will provide them with a positive outlet, provide them an opportunity to develop self esteem, provide an environment which facilitates personal growth and promotes learning to work well with others in a team setting. This program is designed to develop a strong connection with youth at any early age, so that a sense of community, safety and integrity become well entrenched values.”

There are many wonderful programs to engage youth in sports…why not check into opportunities in your community and see how you can make a difference too!

David Sidoo - The Power 50 Vancouver

The Vancouver Magazine Power 50

David Sidoo recently had the honour of being named as one of Vancouver’s Power 50 for 2012 by Vancouver Magazine in their 12th annual publishing of the list.

Each year the Vancouver-focused magazine works with a team of people in the know in order to compile a list of the year’s 50 people with the most influence on the City of Vancouver.

From VanMag online:

47. David Sidoo
Investment banker, philanthropist
The onetime Saskatchewan Roughrider is still riding high on last year’s news that his East West Petroleum Corp. won exploration rights to 400 square kilometres of oil-rich northeast India (this in addition to producing assets in Egypt and Canada, plus positions in Egypt, Yemen, and Eastern Europe). Closer to home, he’s ascended to angel status for his support of breakfast programs for schoolkids in Vancouver and New West and, through his foundation with wife Manjy, high-school and university sports programs (he’s UBC’s largest sports scholarship donor), domestic-violence initiatives with the VPD and RCMP, and arts events through the Vancouver Opera and David Foster Foundation. His standing on this year’s list, though, rests equally on his political connections: he’s become a go-to figure for journalists and lawyers, developers and politicians in the Indo-Canadian community locally. Oh, and in February, UBC renamed its Thunderbird Stadium field for the guy. Age 53

On October 6, 2012 David Sidoo joined 30 of his almost 50 former teammates at BC Place Stadium for the official induction into the BC Football Hall of Fame. David attended the event with his wife Manjy and their two sons. Also in attendance was David’s high school football coach, Doug Woodward, from New Westminster Secondary School. Doug coached David from 9th grade through to his admission at UBC.

David Sidoo’s memorable five-year football career with the Thunderbirds began in 1978, when the UBC team played in its first ever Vanier Cup. Over the years David set several records and earned many awards that made him a shining star in the league. The crowning glory came in 1982 when David helped captain UBC to win its first Vanier Cup under the coaching guidance of many, including head coach Frank Smith.

From the BC Football Hall of Fame website:

1982 UBC Thunderbirds

Under Head Coach Frank Smith, the 1982 UBC football team became the school’s first to capture the Canadian College Championship recognized with the presentation of the Vanier Cup. That season, the Thunderbirds went undefeated against Canadian competition (12-0), beat SFU in the Shrum Bowl, and defeated Manitoba 57-3 to win the Hardy Trophy which represented the Western title. They moved on to the Canadian semi-final against ST. FX winning that game 54-1 and next faced the final hurdle of the collegiate championship game. On November 20, 1982 they defeated the University of Western Ontario 39-14 to capture their first of two titles in the 1980s (the second came in 1986). The school had previously reached the title game in 1978 but fell short. In 1982, running back Glen Steele was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player. Steele was among five first round selections in the Canadian College Draft, among 14 league all-stars, and one of 12 players to achieve a roster spot in the CFL at one time or another. They were voted Sport BC’s Amateur Team of the Year in 1982 and are widely regarded as one of Canadian college football’s most dominant teams across its long history.

On October 6, 2012, David Sidoo and his former teammates from the 1982 UBC Thunderbirds Football team will be inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame along with a number of highly regarded contributors to the sport.

David was present on September 14th when it was announced that 94-year old musician, composer and Vancouver legend, Dal Richards, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Special Award category. Almost 60 years ago Dal wrote the BC Lions’ football team cheer song, “Roar You Lions Roar.” From the Vancouver Sun article, “Richards has been bestowed with the Order of Canada, the Order of B.C., Freedom of the City by Vancouver council, an honourary Doctor of Letters from UBC, an honourary doctorate from BCIT, a place on the B.C. Lions Wall of Fame… Another accolade was added Friday when Richards joined the second class of inductees entering the nascent B.C. Foot-ball Hall of Fame…”

From the BC Football Hall of Fame website:

Outside of the football club itself, there is likely no one person more than Dal Murray Richards to have entertained so many Lions’ fans both on the field and off. As the club’s band leader from the first season in 1954, he led pre-game and half-time shows at Empire Stadium and B.C. Place Stadium that attracted fans of his own. Born in Vancouver, the “King of Swing” played in front of audiences with his “swing” band and also spent a career in hotel management. His most famous song has long been the Lions’ theme, “Roar You Lions Roar” and that may still be heard at every home game. He has been honoured many times and on February 3, 1984 Mayor Mike Harcourt declared “Dal Richards Day” in Vancouver. In 1994, Dal received the Order of Canada, in 2003 the Order of British Columbia, and in 2005 was enshrined on the BC Lions Wall of Fame.

For followers and supporters of Sidoo Family Giving, it’s no secret that David Sidoo holds an illustrious past in the sport of football – from captaining the 1982 Vanier Cup winning UBC Thunderbirds team to a successful 5-year career in the CFL.

To honour David Sidoo’s athletic, philanthropic and business successes, an Achievement of Excellence banner hangs at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Olympic hockey rink at
