If you’ve been following these blog postings, you’ll know by now that David Sidoo is a huge supporter of his alma mater UBC Thunderbirds football team. He’s been instrumental in upgrading training and playing facilities; he’s been instrumental in drawing in new talent on the field and in the coaching line up; and he’s now instrumental in cultivating a “spirit” culture on campus.

David has teamed up with Robert Morton – director of UBC’s biggest event-planning group, and Aaron Bailey – president of the UBC Alma Mater Society, to create a huge stir on campus around Thunderbird’s football.

The intent is to make UBC football the heart of school spirit. So far this year, the results are promising – there were 3000 more fans at the UBC Homecoming 2015 football game than the previous year.

Ideally, the energy will carry off the turf and throughout campus, creating momentum that will carry into other team sports and UBC events:

“The biggest motivation to inject energy, knowledge and money, or what David Sidoo calls the “three Ts” of time, talent and treasure, is the lasting effect this will have on the university as a whole. “

On September 28, 2015 David, Manjy, Dylan and Jordan Sidoo attended the KSF fundraiser in Washington DC. Not only were they there with the honour of co-chairing the annual event, they also announced a new partnership with KSF to launch the KSF Artists of Choice Grants program in Canada in 2016.

The KSF Artists of Choice Grants are currently awarded each year to emerging artists in the US and UK who wish to develop plays, musicals, dance pieces, choir/band, and short films. Grants amounts are up to £10,000 / $10,000. Together with a world-class group of established artists, KSF selects the very best from the many hundreds that apply and provides critical mentoring and professional guidance to help ensure success.

The program, made possible by Sidoo Family Giving, will now launch in Canada, which is wonderful news for the arts in this country.

David Sidoo Honoured at 100 Year Journey Gala

On October 3rd, 2015 David and Manjy Sidoo were honoured to attend the 2nd annual 100 Year Journey gala at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver. More than 500 of the greater Vancouver area’s community leaders from political, business and social sectors were in attendance, with partial proceeds from the event going to support a reprint of the 100 Year Journey book for distribution to schools throughout BC and to support the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.

The event, which was hosted by the former publishers of Mehfil Magazine, is intended to honour South Asian pioneers and navigators in Canada.

The 100 Year Journey Project was established in 2014 by Rana Vig, the former publisher of Mehfil Magazine, to celebrate South Asian pioneers in Canada. A website and book of the same name book share and immortalize their stories as a timeless resource that contributes to the preservation of South Asian heritage and history that does not currently exist in Canadian textbooks. The publication has been approved for use in several school districts in British Columbia, and the publisher plans to expand its reach across the country.
